We’re feeding kids in Allegan County affected by food insecurity and hunger.

Our Mission

We feed the kids of Allegan County affected by food insecurity and hunger.

We partner with schools  year-round to sustain food that fills the weekend food gap.

We ensure the confidentiality of the students and families involved in our programs.

We embrace equity and  diversity among those we serve.

Our Goals

Our Story

George Stoutin and Ron Collins created Children First Lakeshore (CFL) in 2017. CFL is a Douglas, Michigan based, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to feeding children affected by food insecurity and hunger throughout Allegan County.

We’re committed to this mission through fundraising, building partnerships and relationships with organizations, schools and food programs.

At Fennville Elementary, we have witnessed firsthand the powerful and positive impact of Children First Lakeshore’s weekend food program. Each week, our students who face food insecurity take home thoughtfully prepared bags filled with nutritious snacks and meals — support that is not only appreciated, but essential. These food bags provide more than just nourishment: they provide stability, comfort, and a sense of security that carries our students through the weekend and sets them up for success when they return to school on Monday.

The benefits are immediate and far-reaching. Students come to school ready to learn — more focused, less anxious, and better able to engage in classroom activities. Parents and caregivers express heartfelt gratitude for this support, which eases some of the financial and emotional burden they face. Importantly, this program strengthens the bond between our school and the families we serve, underscoring the power of community-based partnerships in meeting the needs of the whole child.

Douglas Elementary School serves students at many economic levels. Nearly 25% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch based on economic need and 13% of our students sign up to receive extra food on weekends through your backpack program.

Our strength at DES comes from the many supports we have to help our kids. Support from Children’s First Lakeshore makes a tremendous impact on the children and families we serve.
